If you’ve been in the trading game for a while, you’ve probably heard a lot of myths about what it takes to be successful. Some traders swear by complex strategies, others think IPOs are too risky, and plenty of people still believe trading is a get-rich-quick scheme.
But what’s the truth?
We recently sat down with Kathy Donnelly on the Trading Truths Podcast to get her take. Kathy is a full-time trader, co-author of The Lifecycle Trade, and someone who has spent years studying the patterns of winning stocks—especially IPOs and super growth stocks.
In our interview, she shared how she went from an electrical engineering career to full-time trading, the lessons she’s learned along the way, and the biggest myths that hold traders back. Here are four of those myths—debunked.

Myth #1: Trading Is a Quick Path to Wealth
A lot of people get into trading because they think it’s an easy way to make money fast. The reality? Trading is a skill—one that takes time, discipline, and patience to master.
Kathy didn’t just wake up one day as a successful trader. She spent years studying market behavior, attending Investor’s Business Daily events, and collaborating with other traders before she found consistency. Like anything else worth mastering, trading requires effort and persistence. If you’re in it for instant riches, you’re setting yourself up for frustration.
Myth #2: IPOs Are Too Risky
It’s true that IPOs can be volatile—but that doesn’t mean they should be ignored. Kathy and her co-authors of The Lifecycle Trade have done extensive research on how newly public companies behave. And the key takeaway? IPOs follow certain phases, and if you understand them, you can position yourself for big opportunities.
Instead of avoiding IPOs altogether, smart traders learn to recognize the best times to enter. Growth stocks have to start somewhere, and some of the biggest winners in history were once IPOs.
Myth #3: The More Complex Your Strategy, the Better
Ever heard someone say that trading success comes down to mastering a million indicators, algorithms, or proprietary systems? Kathy is proof that this just isn’t true.
She keeps things simple—focusing on price action, volume, and key moving averages. That’s it. The more complicated your strategy, the harder it is to stick with it. And when you can’t execute consistently, your results suffer.
Myth #4: You Only Need Technical Analysis
Technical analysis is a powerful tool, but it’s not the only thing that matters. Kathy combines both technical and fundamental analysis to make informed decisions.
She looks at a company’s fundamentals to understand why a stock might have long-term potential, then uses technical analysis to time her entries and exits. It’s this combination that helps her identify strong stocks before they take off.
Final Thoughts
Kathy Donnelly’s trading success didn’t come from chasing shortcuts or overcomplicating things. She built her skills, developed a repeatable process, and learned to manage risk effectively.
